Hollywood star Jonathan Majors has avoided jail time, after he was sentenced to probation for sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend.
In January, Majors was found guilty of assaulting his girlfriend Grace Jabari in the back of a car, an offense for which he was arrested in March last year.
While he was found guilty of harassment, he was later acquitted on separate charges of aggravated harassment and another count of assault in the third degree.
The 34-year-old star of Creed III and other films had faced up to a year behind bars for the conviction.
During a hearing in New York, Judge Michael Gaffey said: “Jail is not necessary.”
Addressing the court, an emotional Jabari said she did not feel Majors was not remorseful for his actions.
“He was not only trying to intimidate me, but paint me as crazy. He is not sorry and has not accepted responsibility. He will do this again. He will hurt other women. This is a man who believes he is above the law.
“I will not rest until I feel he is not a danger to anyone else. He refuses to acknowledge his guilt. I have seen his physical anger, and he does not have control over it.”
Meanwhile, Majors’ lawyer Priya Chaudhry, the actor’s attorney, has claimed that Jabbari would use any statement “against him in her civil case” hence his decision not to say anything after his sentencing.
She also said Majors’ career had been ruined by all the the legal drama.
Following the guilty verdict, Majors was immediately dropped by Marvel Studios.
Marvel had had cast him as Kang the Conqueror, a role envisioned as the main villain in the entertainment empire’s movies and television shows that would likely have cemented his name as one of the biggest actors in Hollywood.
Chaudhry said Majors would be appealing his conviction.
“Mr Majors maintains his innocence and plans to appeal his conviction.”
