Lewis Hamilton has found himself at the center of an online debate after a years-old interview discussing wealth inequality resurfaced following the Monaco Grand Prix.

The seven-time Formula One world champion, who recently finished second in Monaco, is facing renewed scrutiny over comments he made during a 2023 appearance on Jay Shetty’s *On Purpose* podcast.

In the interview, Hamilton reflected on the growing gap between rich and poor, pointing to homelessness in Los Angeles as an example of economic inequality.

“One of the things that I struggle with every day… is that there is such a disparity between the wealthy and the poor,” Hamilton said at the time.

He also argued that extreme concentrations of wealth should be reconsidered, saying: “You shouldn’t be able to have billions. I think there should be a limit to how much you can have because there’s enough to go around for everyone.”

The comments have resurfaced on social media, where users have questioned whether Hamilton’s views align with his own financial success. Estimates place the British driver’s fortune in the hundreds of millions of dollars, prompting critics to accuse him of being out of touch.

Many social media users also pointed to Hamilton’s luxury lifestyle and his residence in Monaco, a principality often associated with wealthy athletes and celebrities.

Others, however, defended the Ferrari driver, arguing that acknowledging inequality does not prevent someone from being successful or advocating for change.

Supporters also highlighted Hamilton’s charitable work through Mission 44, the foundation he launched to help improve educational opportunities and tackle social inequality for young people.

The debate intensified after the old interview clip gained traction online, generating thousands of reactions across X and other social platforms.

While some critics accused Hamilton of hypocrisy, others praised him for using his platform to discuss issues that many public figures avoid.

Hamilton has not publicly responded to the renewed attention surrounding the interview.

The discussion serves as another example of how comments made years earlier can quickly return to the spotlight, particularly when they touch on topics as divisive as wealth, privilege and economic inequality.
