Dame Dash has stirred up fresh debate in the hip-hop world after claiming Drake would defeat Jay-Z if the two rap heavyweights ever became involved in a full-scale lyrical battle.
The former Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder made the comments while reacting to Jay-Z’s recent freestyle performance at the Roots Picnic, which sparked widespread discussion among fans.
Many listeners interpreted parts of Jay-Z’s freestyle as subtle shots aimed at several high-profile figures, including Drake, Dame Dash and Ye, formerly known as Kanye West.
Speaking during an interview with The Art of Dialogue, Dash dismissed the freestyle and argued that Jay-Z’s bars failed to impress him.
The music executive then turned his attention to the possibility of a rap feud between Jay-Z and Drake, making it clear where he believes the advantage would lie.
“I don’t think Drake can beat Kendrick, but I know Drake can beat Jay. I know that for a fact,” Dash said.
His comments arrive shortly after Drake reignited conversations around Jay-Z by referencing the rap icon on Iceman, one of three albums he released in May.
Dash also questioned why Jay-Z appeared to avoid mentioning certain rivals during the freestyle.
Referring to rapper 50 Cent, Dash suggested Jay-Z may have intentionally steered clear of taking aim at the New York rap veteran.
“He’s getting at Drake,” Dash said. “I was like, damn, this n***a ain’t say nothing about 50? I guess he don’t want no smoke with 50.”
The remarks have already sparked strong reactions online, with fans debating whether Drake’s commercial success and hit-making ability would be enough to overcome Jay-Z’s reputation as one of hip-hop’s most respected lyricists.
Although there is currently no indication that either artist is interested in escalating tensions, Dash’s comments have added another layer to ongoing discussions surrounding some of rap’s biggest names.
Meanwhile, Jay-Z is preparing for a series of special performances at Yankee Stadium in July celebrating two of his most influential albums, Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint. The shows are scheduled for July 10, July 11 and July 12.
