Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor best known for playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has passed away.
Warner, who was 54 years old, drowned on Sunday while vacationing in Costa Rica.
According to the Costa Rica Judicial Investigation Agency, Warner was pulled out to sea by a strong current while swimming at Playa Grande near Cocles in Limón province, sometime between 2:00 and 2:30 p.m. local time.
Warner was rescued from the water by bystanders and treated by the Costa Rican Red Cross onshore, but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Warner became famous for his role as Bill Cosby’s son on the popular American sitcom, which ran from 1984 to 1992. He received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1986.
He landed the role after being handpicked by Bill Cosby during the final day of a nationwide audition.
After The Cosby Show, Warner appeared in other TV series like Malcolm & Eddie with comedian Eddie Griffin. He also had guest roles on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Sesame Street.
More recently, he played Dr. AJ Austin, a heart surgeon, on the medical drama The Resident.
In addition to his acting career, Warner won a Grammy in 2015 for Best Traditional R&B Performance along with Robert Glasper and Lalah Hathaway for their rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Jesus Children of America.”
His spoken word album “Hiding In Plain View” earned him another Grammy nomination in 2023.
