Judge condemns ‘deceit and cruelty’

Miami County Common Pleas Judge Jeannine Pratt imposed the maximum sentence on Monday after describing Flynn’s behaviour as involving extraordinary levels of deceit, manipulation and cruelty.

The judge said the former church music pastor had used his Christian faith to manipulate people around him and had failed to show genuine remorse for killing his wife.

A jury found Flynn guilty of aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence following an eight-day trial.

The jurors deliberated for approximately two hours before returning guilty verdicts on all counts.

Prosecutors said Flynn staged burglary

Prosecutors said Flynn killed 37-year-old Ashley before attempting to make the crime scene look like a burglary.

Flynn called emergency services and claimed that an intruder had entered the family home and shot his wife. Investigators, however, found no evidence supporting his account of a break-in.

Although the murder weapon was never recovered, prosecutors presented digital evidence showing Flynn moving around the house when he claimed to have been asleep.

His fingerprints and DNA were also found at the scene, while investigators accused him of changing the crime scene to support his story about an unknown intruder.

Affair presented as motive for murder

During the trial, prosecutors focused on Flynn’s affair with Alleigha Botner, who was 20 when she met him while working as an intern at his church in 2022.

Botner testified that their affair lasted more than a year and claimed Flynn had spoken about hating and killing his wife.

Jurors were shown thousands of messages exchanged between the pair. In one message sent the night before Ashley was killed, Flynn told Botner that he had chosen her, was free and that “actions” would follow the next day.

Prosecutors argued that Flynn wanted to escape his marriage and begin a new life with his mistress.

Flynn maintains his innocence

Flynn cried as he addressed his daughters and other family members before being sentenced.

He apologised for his affair, broken promises and the pain he had caused but continued to deny killing Ashley.

Flynn told the court that he was not lying when he declared before God that he had not murdered his wife.

One of his daughters said in a victim-impact statement that she did not intend to visit him in prison.

Flynn’s defence argued during the trial that investigators had produced no direct evidence proving he fired the gun. His lawyers are expected to appeal the conviction.

Ashley was a schoolteacher, youth volleyball coach and church volunteer. She had encouraged Flynn to audition for American Idol, where he appeared briefly during the programme’s 12th season in 2013.
