Jada Pinkett Smith has asked a judge to order Will Smith’s former friend Bilaal Salaam to undergo an independent mental examination as part of his $3 million lawsuit against her.

According to newly filed court documents, the actress wants Salaam examined by a doctor for approximately five to six hours to assess his claims that her alleged conduct caused him severe emotional distress.

Salaam has accused Pinkett Smith of threatening and intimidating him, allegations she strongly denies.

Mental health claims ‘central’ to lawsuit

Pinkett Smith’s lawyers argue that Salaam has placed his psychological and emotional condition at the centre of the legal dispute by seeking damages for the distress he allegedly experienced.

Her legal team says an independent doctor should therefore be allowed to determine whether Salaam is suffering from the conditions described in his lawsuit and, if so, the extent of those conditions.

The request was filed ahead of a hearing scheduled for November 9 before Judge Eric Harmon in Van Nuys Superior Court.

Salaam claims alleged threats affected his life

Salaam, who is also known as Brother Bilaal, is seeking $3 million in damages.

He claims Pinkett Smith confronted and threatened him during a private celebration for Will Smith’s birthday in September 2021.

According to his lawsuit, she allegedly warned him that he could “end up missing or catch a bullet” if he continued discussing her personal affairs. Pinkett Smith has rejected those allegations.

Salaam claims the alleged confrontation and subsequent events left him living in fear, caused him to spend time outside the United States and contributed to the breakdown of a long-term romantic relationship.

He also alleges that the emotional strain affected his physical health and contributed to him developing high blood pressure.

Dispute linked to Oscars controversy

Salaam has further alleged that members of the Smiths’ circle targeted him after he refused to assist with crisis management following the 2022 Academy Awards.

During the ceremony, Will Smith walked on stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

Salaam claims the alleged campaign against him intensified after people close to the couple discovered that he planned to write a memoir discussing his time with Will Smith.

Pinkett Smith disputes the allegations

Pinkett Smith has denied Salaam’s accusations and previously sought to have his lawsuit dismissed.

Her lawyers argue that Salaam has not provided sufficient evidence to support his emotional distress claims. The requested examination would form part of the discovery process rather than serve as a finding that he has or does not have a mental health condition.

A judge must approve the request before any examination can take place.

The case remains ongoing, and Salaam’s allegations have not been proven in court.
