Kim Kardashian has revealed that spending nearly five years largely single after separating from Kanye West allowed her to heal, concentrate on her children and pursue projects that mattered to her.
The 45-year-old reality television star and SKIMS founder filed for divorce from West in February 2021 after almost seven years of marriage.
Apart from a nine-month relationship with comedian Pete Davidson, Kardashian said she remained romantically unattached until beginning her current relationship with Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton.
“I was really single for five years,” she told The Times. “And that felt great.”
“I could focus on my kids and projects that I really wanted to be involved with. I really felt no rush.”
Single life ‘didn’t feel empty’
Kardashian said she did not experience her years without a long-term partner as an empty or lonely period.
Instead, she viewed the time as an opportunity to recover from her marriage, work on herself and establish what she wanted from the next stage of her life.
“I really didn’t feel empty,” she explained. “I felt like I needed my time.”
“I wanted to completely heal and just work on myself. I wasn’t ready to open up. I really wasn’t even thinking about it.”
She added: “The universe works in your favour when you just allow it to.”
Kardashian shares four children with West: North, 13, Saint, 10, Chicago, eight, and Psalm, seven.
She said being single allowed her to devote more attention to her children while expanding her business interests and continuing her legal studies.
Her shapewear and clothing company SKIMS, which she co-founded in 2019, is now reportedly valued at approximately $5 billion.
She has also expanded her acting career and appeared in Ryan Murphy’s legal drama All’s Fair.
Brief romance with Pete Davidson
Although Kardashian described herself as having been single for five years, she dated Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson for approximately nine months.
The pair met when Kardashian hosted Saturday Night Live in October 2021 and began dating shortly afterwards.
Their relationship attracted significant attention, particularly because of West’s repeated public attacks against Davidson.
Kardashian and Davidson separated in August 2022, with reports at the time blaming their demanding schedules and the difficulties of maintaining a long-distance relationship.
She did not publicly enter another serious relationship for several years.
Kim declines to discuss Lewis Hamilton
Kardashian was considerably less forthcoming when asked about her relationship with Hamilton.
“In the most respectful way, I’d probably rather not,” she responded.
Despite declining to discuss their romance in the interview, Kardashian and the seven-time Formula One world champion have increasingly shared glimpses of their relationship publicly.
The pair have known each other for more than a decade and were photographed together at the 2014 GQ Men of the Year Awards alongside their respective partners at the time, West and Nicole Scherzinger.
Romantic speculation intensified after Kardashian and Hamilton both attended Kate Hudson’s New Year’s Eve party in Aspen, Colorado, at the end of 2025.
They were later seen together at the Super Bowl in February and at several other events and holiday destinations.
Hamilton subsequently shared affectionate photographs of the couple on Instagram, including images of them embracing on a beach. Kardashian has also posted photographs of them together, including an intimate mirror selfie.
Focusing on her children and career
Kardashian said she tries to teach her children the values of hard work and gratitude despite the family’s wealth and privileged lifestyle.
She recalled her late father, lawyer Robert Kardashian, warning her that she would have to work hard to maintain the comfortable life she experienced while growing up in Beverly Hills.
“It’s something I talk to my kids about constantly, about hard work, never taking things for granted, always having gratitude,” she said.
“I lead by example. I’m really open with them about my work, all of the hard work that I put into my law studies, and they’re proud.”
Kardashian’s comments suggest she did not view finding another relationship as an urgent priority after her divorce.
Instead, she said the years largely spent alone gave her the space to heal before allowing herself to become emotionally available again.
