Jay-Z has offered rare praise for his estranged former collaborator Ye, describing him as one of the most gifted creative figures of their generation despite years of public tension.
The remarks appear in the sixth episode of “JAŸ-Z In 8”, the rapper’s new documentary series with producer Rick Rubin. The episode centres partly on “Jail”, their 2021 collaboration from Ye’s album “Donda”.
Jay-Z praises Ye’s creative brilliance
During the discussion, Jay-Z calls Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, “one of the most brilliant creatives we’re ever going to see”.
He also reflects on the personal dynamic that developed between them as Ye progressed from producing music for Jay-Z to becoming one of the world’s most influential rappers and fashion figures.
“No matter what, he’s always had this space for me and this reverence as his big brother,” Jay-Z says.
The Roc Nation founder acknowledges that Ye has “done his things”, an apparent reference to the controversial conduct and extremist statements that have severely damaged his public standing.
However, Jay-Z says he believes Ye has not lost the respect he previously held for him.
The comments do not confirm that the two musicians have reconciled or resumed communicating.
Rick Rubin discusses Ye’s isolation
Rubin introduces the subject while playing “Jail”, the opening track from Ye’s 2021 album.
He compares Ye’s public isolation following his increasingly extreme statements to a form of imprisonment, arguing that the rapper had effectively been removed from his community.
Jay-Z also breaks down portions of his verse on the track, including the line: “Told him, ‘Stop all of that red cap, we going home.’”
The lyric referred to Ye’s support for United States President Donald Trump and the red “Make America Great Again” cap he frequently wore.
“Jail” marked a significant musical reunion between the pair following several years of strained relations. It remains their most recent officially released collaboration.
Relationship deteriorated after years of collaboration
Jay-Z and Ye share one of the most consequential creative partnerships in hip-hop history.
Ye produced several tracks for Jay-Z before releasing his own debut album, while the pair later recorded the 2011 collaborative album “Watch the Throne”.
Their relationship deteriorated publicly during the following decade amid disagreements concerning business, politics and their personal lives.
Tensions escalated again after Ye made derogatory comments concerning Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s children. Ye subsequently apologised, but Jay-Z appeared to address the remarks during a freestyle at the Roots Picnic in May 2026.
Despite that dispute, Ye later showed appreciation for the visual presentation of Jay-Z’s three concerts at Yankee Stadium, particularly the work of creative director Gabriel Moses.
Jay-Z’s new remarks demonstrate that he continues to respect Ye’s artistic abilities, although they offer no evidence that their personal relationship has been repaired.
Episode scheduled for October release
“JAŸ-Z In 8” features eight extended conversations in which Jay-Z and Rubin revisit music from across the rapper’s career.
The first four episodes are currently available, while episodes five and six are scheduled for release on HBO and HBO Max in the United States on October 2.
The sixth episode is due to become available to British viewers through Mubi on October 3.
The series will conclude with its final two episodes the following week.
