Oprah Winfrey has revealed that she once persuaded an entire studio audience to keep secret photographs of Whitney Houston after the late singer allegedly fell off stage during a relapse.

The television icon shared the story while accepting the LionHeart Award at the Cannes Lions festival in France, describing it as one of the most remarkable examples of trust she experienced during her decades in broadcasting.

According to Winfrey, the incident occurred when Houston appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009.

Speaking at the event, Oprah said the legendary singer had resumed using drugs before the appearance and was not sober when she arrived to perform in front of the studio audience.

“The day she came to my show to perform in front of the audience, she was not clean, and she fell off the stage,” Winfrey recalled.

The talk show host said she immediately realised the potential damage such images could cause if they became public.

“I knew that if that story got out that she had fallen off the stage, that she would be destroyed by that,” Oprah said.

Although audience members were carrying cameras and had photographed the incident, Oprah said she personally appealed to them not to release the images.

“I begged them not to put those pictures out because it would ruin her life, and they did not,” she said.

According to Oprah, none of the photographs have ever surfaced publicly.

She described the audience’s response as extraordinary and suggested such discretion would be virtually impossible in today’s social media era.

“That would not happen today,” she said.

Houston’s appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009 became one of the most memorable interviews of her later years. During the programme, the singer spoke candidly about her struggles and personal battles before performing for the audience.

The revelation has reignited conversations about Houston’s long battle with addiction and the intense public scrutiny she faced throughout her career.

Houston, one of the most successful recording artists of all time, struggled with substance abuse for years before her death in February 2012.

She was found unresponsive in a bathtub at a Beverly Hills hotel at the age of 48. Authorities later ruled her death an accidental drowning, with heart disease and cocaine use listed as contributing factors.

Oprah shared the story while receiving the prestigious LionHeart Award at Cannes Lions, an honour awarded to individuals who have used their influence and public platform to create meaningful and lasting positive change.

More than a decade after Houston’s death, the newly revealed incident offers another glimpse into the challenges the superstar faced behind the scenes during the final years of her life.
