American singer and actress Demi Lovato has admitted that her drug abuse ‘saved her life at times’ because using drugs was a way of coping with her self-harming and eating disorder.

The songwriter who was admitted for drug overdose in July 2018 revealed that something positive came out from her drug addiction.

“If people are using drugs or if they are dealing with an eating disorder or self-harm that they want to die… In the same way it almost killed me, it saved my life at times, because there were times that I dealt with suicidal ideations.

“And had I gone forward with that in that moment, instead of another destructive coping mechanism, I wouldn’t be here to tell my story … I turned to those coping mechanisms because I genuinely was in so much pain that I didn’t want to die and I didn’t know what else to do,” she said.

As much as she admits the drugs saved her life at some point, the 28-year-old singer vowed never to return to drugs again in order to fight her negative feelings as she has found another way to cope with her thoughts.

“I did the best that I could at times and now that I have other tools and other resources, I know how else to deal and how else to cope so I don’t have to resort to those behaviors again.

The ‘Confident’ hitmaker also admitted that she has been comparing herself to other women for years and ‘not feeling good enough’ but now she is willing to be authentic.
