Boris Johnson and fiancée Carrie Symonds welcomed a baby boy on Wednesday morning, the couple’s first child and what is speculated to be the British PM’s sixth child at least.
Johnson, who only recently recovered from an aggressive bout of COVID-19, had previously indicated that he would take some time off after the birth of the child.
However, with his country in dire need of leadership due to the global epidemic, indications are that the PM will delay the leave that comes a little over four months into his tenure.
The couple got engaged in late 2019 and revealed they were expecting a newborn in February.
It is understood Johnson was present throughout the birth, at an NHS hospital in London.
Boris already has four children with second wife Marina, Lara Lettice, 26, Milo Arthur, 24, Cassia Peaches, 22, and Theodore Apollo, 20. He also has a fifth child, Stephanie Macintyre, 11, after an affair with art consultant Helen Macintyre.
Although unconfirmed, he has a sixth child from another affair also rumoured.
“The PM and Ms Symonds would like to thank the fantastic NHS maternity team,” the PM’s spokeswoman said.
The birth of the baby boy inspired political friends and foes to unite for the special moment, as they sent congratulations to Johnson and his wife to be.
Australian prime minister Scott Morrison and Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe were among the first international leaders to offer their congratulations.
Mr Johnson’s Conservative colleagues have also been congratulating the couple on social media, with Health Secretary Matt Hancock saying: “So thrilled for Boris and Carrie. Wonderful to have a moment of unalloyed joy!”
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer also offered his congratulations on the “wonderful news”.
