Donald Trump has responded positively to the suggestion that Nicki Minaj become the next White House press secretary, calling it “a good idea” in an interview with political commentator Benny Johnson.
Trump said he would think about the proposal when Johnson asked whether Minaj could take on the job. He then turned the question back to Johnson, telling the interviewer he might also be suited to the role.
Trump’s remarks did not amount to an appointment or confirm that Minaj is formally being considered. No official offer or selection process has been announced.
How the suggestion started
The idea gained attention earlier this week after White House Communications Director Steven Cheung shared a video of himself speaking with Minaj aboard Air Force One. Cheung jokingly introduced her as a possible new press secretary.
In the video, Minaj praised Trump’s business experience, his approach to international affairs and his work ethic on the campaign trail. She later shared the clip on social media, adding an American flag and an emoji.
Minaj’s recent support for Trump
Minaj’s appearance on Air Force One came ahead of a Republican campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on October 25, where she joined Trump on stage. She voiced support for the president and urged people to back Republican candidates in the upcoming midterm elections.
The rapper’s public support for Trump has drawn attention because she previously criticised some of his policies, including his approach to immigration. More recently, she has appeared at events alongside him and described herself as one of his supporters.
Trump’s response has added to the online speculation about Minaj’s possible role in the administration. For now, however, his comment remains a favourable reaction to a suggestion rather than confirmation that the rapper will become press secretary.
