Carmen Efferson, Stevie Wonder’s former fiancée, is reportedly surprised that the singer is trying to evict her from the Los Angeles home where she has lived for nearly four decades.

A source close to Efferson told TMZ she was shocked by the lawsuit after their long relationship. The source said Efferson had told friends that Wonder promised her the home, although she never received a deed.

Efferson has made the property her home over the years, and her late mother also lived there until her death, according to the source. The pair reportedly had an on-and-off relationship dating back to the 1980s, and Wonder helped Efferson find work in the music industry.

Dispute centres on home and insurance inspection

Wonder’s lawsuit says Efferson began living at the property in 1988 under a verbal agreement that required no monthly rent. A source close to Efferson told TMZ she paid the home’s utilities.

The dispute escalated this summer when Wonder’s representatives sought access for an insurance inspection. His legal team says Efferson refused entry, putting the property’s insurance coverage at risk. Efferson had said she felt harassed and did not consent to the proposed entry, according to correspondence included in court documents.

A source familiar with Wonder’s position told TMZ the dispute was about safety and securing insurance for the home, rather than being personal.

Wonder’s team says Efferson was given an August 27 deadline to leave, but remained at the property. He is asking a judge to evict her and is seeking legal costs and damages.

Eviction claim has not been decided

The lawsuit puts a decades-long living arrangement under legal scrutiny. Efferson has not yet filed a response in court, and no ruling has been reported. The court will determine whether Wonder is entitled to regain possession of the property.
