Piers Morgan has announced that he is taking legal action against Earl Spencer and his publishers over what he described as “demonstrable lies” written about him in a new memoir about Princess Diana.

The journalist and broadcaster disclosed the move in a breaking statement on X, saying further details would be revealed on his programme.

“BREAKING: I am taking legal action against Earl Spencer and his publishers over demonstrable lies he has written about me in his new book, which call into question his credibility as a supposed ‘historian’,” Morgan wrote.

Morgan did not identify the disputed passages or explain the precise nature of his proposed legal action in the initial announcement.

Memoir promises new account of Diana’s life

Earl Spencer’s book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, offers his personal account of his relationship with the late Princess of Wales and the events surrounding her death in Paris in August 1997.

The memoir is scheduled to be published worldwide on Tuesday, 22 September.

Penguin Michael Joseph, a division of Penguin Random House, is publishing the book in the United Kingdom.

Spencer has said his intention is to present the truth about Diana from her brother’s perspective and challenge what he considers long-established inaccuracies about her life.

The book has already generated controversy over its allegations concerning King Charles III and other members of the Royal Family.

Morgan predicted he could be targeted

Before announcing legal action, Morgan had publicly predicted that he could be among those criticised in Spencer’s memoir.

Appearing on The Royals Uncensored earlier in September, Morgan described the forthcoming book as a potential “bombshell” and suggested Spencer would use it to settle old scores.

“I’m probably going to be one of them,” Morgan said at the time. “I’ve had a rocky old ride with old Earl Spencer.”

Morgan also questioned whether revisiting divisions surrounding Diana nearly three decades after her death would benefit the Royal Family.

His latest statement escalates that long-running tension into a legal dispute. However, until Morgan releases the promised details, the specific statements he alleges are false and the legal remedies he intends to seek remain unclear.
