David Beckham has finally received one of Hollywood’s most prestigious honours, but not everyone is convinced he belongs there.
The former England captain was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame during a ceremony in Los Angeles on June 12, attended by wife Victoria Beckham, children Romeo, Cruz and Harper, and Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise.
An emotional Beckham described the moment as “truly incredible” and reflected on his journey from East London to becoming one of the world’s most recognisable sports figures.
“I grew up in the East End of London, a long way from Hollywood,” Beckham said. “As a young boy, I loved soccer more than anything.”
The football icon also thanked his family and admitted it was “mindblowing” to have Cruise present for the occasion.
However, the honour quickly sparked debate online, with many social media users questioning why a retired footballer had been awarded a star typically associated with actors, musicians and entertainers.
“Why would an English footballer get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?” one user asked, while others argued the recognition should be reserved for traditional Hollywood stars.
But organisers insist Beckham’s inclusion is fully justified.
Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez said Beckham was recognised under the Sports Entertainment category, citing his influence on football’s growth in the United States and his broader impact on global culture.
His role in helping elevate Major League Soccer following his move to LA Galaxy was highlighted as a key factor in the decision.
Martinez also pointed to Beckham’s growing entertainment credentials through Studio 99, the production company behind several successful documentaries, including Netflix’s hit series Beckham.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star joins an exclusive group of sports figures honoured on the Walk of Fame, including boxing legend Muhammad Ali, basketball icon Magic Johnson and tennis great Billie Jean King.
Victoria Beckham paid tribute to her husband during the ceremony, praising him not only for his sporting achievements but also for the person he has become.
“David, I am so proud of everything you have achieved so far, but even more proud of the husband, father and person that you have always been,” she said.
The honour caps another remarkable chapter for Beckham, who was also knighted by King Charles III last year, officially becoming Sir David Beckham.
Whether fans agree with the decision or not, Beckham’s star is now permanently etched into Hollywood history.
