Tributes have poured in for British singer-songwriter Talay Riley after the musician was fatally stabbed in east London.
Riley, whose real name was Mark Orabiyi, died after police were called to an address in Silvertown on Friday morning. Emergency services found the 35-year-old suffering from stab wounds at around 9am, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second man, believed to be in his 20s, was also found with multiple stab injuries and was taken to hospital. Police said his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.
The Metropolitan Police launched a murder investigation and arrested three people on suspicion of murder. A 27-year-old man has since been released on bail pending further inquiries, while a 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were released with no further action.
Riley built an impressive career in the music industry after signing his first major publishing deal at the age of 18. He became known not only as a performer but also as a highly sought-after songwriter, contributing to tracks for some of the biggest names in music.
His songwriting credits included work with artists such as Dua Lipa, Zendaya, Britney Spears, Jessie J, Ellie Goulding, Craig David and Tinie Tempah. He also co-wrote Chip’s chart-topping UK single “Oopsy Daisy.”
Beyond songwriting, Riley toured internationally alongside artists including Usher, Trey Songz and Skepta.
His family paid tribute to him in a statement, describing him as a “beloved son, brother, uncle and friend” whose kindness, talent and spirit touched countless lives.
The music industry also reacted with shock. Rapper Chip shared an emotional message, saying Riley “didn’t deserve to go out like that” and praising the songwriter’s lasting legacy.
Riley’s brother, songwriter Scribz Riley, posted a heartfelt tribute online, describing his sibling as a mentor, inspiration and guiding light whose death had left him devastated.
Other stars, including Stormzy, Wretch 32, Khalid, H.E.R., Kehlani and Keisha Buchanan, joined the growing list of celebrities paying tribute.
Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke said officers were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing and appealed for witnesses or anyone with CCTV footage from the area to come forward.
The musician’s family is being supported by specialist officers as the investigation continues.
