Rapper Latto has confirmed that a lyric widely interpreted as a shot at Cardi B was indeed directed at the Bronx superstar, revealing that she was deeply hurt after being publicly insulted by someone she considered a friend.
The admission came during a recent interview on *The Breakfast Club*, where the Atlanta rapper addressed months of speculation surrounding a line from her song *Gimme Dat*.
The controversy dates back to last year when Cardi B was caught on a leaked phone call angrily lashing out during a conversation with Ice Spice’s manager. In the recording, Cardi referred to Latto using derogatory language and threatened violence before later issuing a public apology.
At the time, Cardi acknowledged she had spoken out of anger and expressed regret over her comments.
“I was ranting and hot at the moment but I f*** with Latto heavy,” Cardi wrote. “I respect everything about her.”
Despite the apology, Latto now says the incident left a lasting impact.

On *Gimme Dat*, she appeared to respond directly to Cardi’s remarks, rapping about a luxury handbag reference that many fans immediately linked to Cardi’s public apology.
Speaking openly about the situation, Latto confirmed the lyrics were inspired by the fallout.
“Well, yes it was about Cardi,” she said. “I rap about what’s going on in my life.”
The rapper explained that the dispute unfolded during a particularly emotional period because she was in the early stages of pregnancy and had recently gone out of her way to support Cardi’s music.
Latto revealed she rushed to record a verse for Cardi’s *Errtime Remix*, only to see headlines days later about being called derogatory names.
“I was at an early stage of my pregnancy and I rushed to the studio to do this verse for her first-week sales,” Latto said. “Literally like two days later, I’m seeing all over the internet I’m being called p***y.”
She added that the situation was especially painful because the two artists had developed a friendship beyond the music industry.
“It was someone I deadass looked at as a friend. We was on a texting basis,” she said.
While Latto made it clear she was hurt by the incident, she stopped short of completely closing the door on reconciliation.
“I’m open to a conversation,” she said, although she acknowledged she does not know when such a discussion might happen.
The comments have reignited interest in the relationship between the two rappers, who were once viewed as allies within the female rap scene.
For now, there appears to be no immediate resolution to the fallout, but Latto’s willingness to talk suggests the possibility of repairing the friendship remains alive.
Born Alyssa Michelle Stephens, Latto rose to prominence after winning *The Rap Game* in 2016 and later established herself as one of hip-hop’s biggest stars with hits including *Bitch from da Souf* and the Grammy-nominated smash *Big Energy*.
The rapper, who changed her stage name from Mulatto to Latto in 2021, remains one of the most commercially successful female artists of her generation.
