Fans of pop princess Britney Spears this weekend called for her to be freed from conservatorship, in light of Kanye West’s announcement that he would be running for president despite his history of mental health problems.
Britney has been in conservatorship for a dozen years after suffering a public mental health breakdown in 2007.
The pop star, 38, has not been in complete control of her finances and important life choices since 2008, with her father James ‘Jamie’ Spears having been her co-conservator since 2008. He is believed to still be handling her finances.
At the end of last year, Spears missed a hearing on the matter, with the conservatorship extended until August.
“There’s been no formal request by her to get out of conservatorship,” said lawyer Troy Martin at the time.
Spears’ fans however, where in an uproar over the weekend after Kanye West, who also suffered a mental breakdown in 2016, announced he would be running in November.
If Kanye was free to run for President, Britney could also be trusted to take care of her own life from now onwards, her fans argued.
One Britney fan wrote on Twitter : “Britney Spears goes through a mental health crisis publicly and she loses her rights. “Kanye West goes through a mental health crisis publicly and he runs for president. #FreeBritney.”
Another said : “Kanye can run for Pres but Britney Spears can’t even vote becuz her father holds her in a permanent conservatorship #FreeBritney & restore her civil rights.”
