Selma Blair has reportedly been charged with two counts of assault following a chaotic incident aboard a Delta Air Lines flight to New York.
The actress allegedly tried to open an aircraft door during the flight before punching one flight attendant and biting another as crew members attempted to restrain her.
Her representative said Blair experienced a medical emergency that led to the alleged behaviour and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Flight attendants injured during confrontation
The incident occurred on Sunday aboard Delta Flight 938 from Los Angeles International Airport to John F Kennedy International Airport.
Authorities said the passenger repeatedly attempted to open an aircraft door while the plane was in the air.
Blair allegedly struck one flight attendant and bit another during the confrontation. One crew member reportedly suffered a laceration, while the other sustained a bite injury.
Dispatch recordings obtained by TMZ show that the pilot requested medical personnel and law enforcement officers to meet the plane at the gate.
One flight attendant was subsequently taken to hospital for further evaluation.
Blair was placed in restraints aboard the aircraft before being arrested when the flight landed safely at JFK. Delta said the incident caused no operational disruption and that the plane arrived ahead of schedule.
Actress accused of kicking police officer
Blair was taken by ambulance to a hospital for a medical evaluation after her arrest.
Law enforcement sources told TMZ that while travelling in the ambulance, she allegedly kicked a Port Authority police officer in the head several times.
After arriving at the hospital, Blair is also accused of assaulting a nurse. The nurse reportedly decided to press charges.
Blair has now reportedly been charged with two counts of assault—one relating to the police officer and another involving the nurse.
It was not immediately clear whether additional charges could result from the alleged attacks on the flight attendants or the reported attempt to open the aircraft door.
The FBI is investigating because the initial incident occurred aboard an aircraft during a flight.
Representative cites medical emergency
A representative for Blair said the alleged conduct followed a medical emergency.
“Selma experienced a medical emergency that led to the alleged conduct,” the representative said.
“Upon landing, she received immediate medical attention and is currently in stable condition.”
The nature of the medical emergency has not been disclosed. Blair reportedly remained in hospital for evaluation following the incident.
Delta issues zero-tolerance statement
Delta responded by stressing that the airline does not tolerate disruptive conduct aboard its aircraft.
“Delta has zero tolerance for unruly or unlawful behaviour, as the safety of our customers and crew always comes first,” a spokesperson said.
The airline referred further questions to law enforcement.
Blair was involved in a separate incident aboard a flight in 2016, when she was removed from an aircraft on a stretcher following an outburst. She later apologised and said she had mixed alcohol with medication.
The 54-year-old actress is known for her roles in Cruel Intentions, Legally Blonde, The Sweetest Thing and the Hellboy films.
The latest allegations have not been tested in court, and Blair has not entered a plea to the reported charges.
