French Montana has sparked a social media debate after telling a clothing vendor at ComplexCon that he would not pay for merchandise because he normally charges $250,000 to wear a brand.

Footage circulating online shows the rapper examining clothes at a designer’s booth while surrounded by a crowd.

“We not paying for anything here. I charge $250,000 to wear something,” French said.

He then argued that the publicity generated by someone of his profile wearing the clothing would be more valuable than the price of the items.

“When people like me come, and we rock the brand, everybody else is going to buy your brand,” he added.

The identity of the vendor and whether French eventually took any merchandise without paying were not immediately clear from the widely circulated footage.

Social media divided over French Montana’s claim

The exchange quickly attracted criticism after the clip spread across social media.

Some viewers accused the rapper of expecting an independent designer to surrender products in return for exposure. They argued that smaller businesses face considerable costs when manufacturing clothes, hiring staff and paying for space at large conventions.

Others defended French, pointing out that gifting products to celebrities and influencers is an established fashion marketing strategy.

Brands regularly provide free clothing to prominent figures in the hope that an appearance, photograph or social media post will generate publicity and sales.

However, critics said such arrangements are normally agreed between the brand and celebrity rather than announced at a vendor’s booth while the product is being offered for sale.

ComplexCon attracts brands and celebrities

The exchange occurred during ComplexCon’s 10th-anniversary event, held at the Los Angeles Convention Center on 3 and 4 October.

The annual festival brings together music, fashion, streetwear, art and popular culture. Its marketplace includes established companies alongside emerging designers seeking exposure and direct sales.

French Montana was among several prominent entertainers who attended the event. He also participated in the Album of the Year: LIVE discussion alongside DJ Akademiks and Adam22.

His comments illustrate the sometimes uncomfortable relationship between celebrity marketing and small businesses.

Although a celebrity endorsement can potentially generate significant publicity, there is no guarantee that someone wearing an item will translate into sales worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

No formal endorsement agreement confirmed

French has previously worked on paid fashion campaigns, including a collaboration with Pelle Pelle involving fellow rapper Max B.

Those arrangements demonstrate that his image and public profile have commercial value. However, no evidence has emerged that the ComplexCon vendor had agreed to exchange its merchandise for an endorsement.

French has not publicly clarified whether his $250,000 figure represents his normal endorsement fee or whether he was speaking jokingly during the encounter.

For now, the viral clip continues to divide viewers over whether his proposed endorsement was a valuable opportunity for the designer or an example of celebrity entitlement.
