LeBron James’ reported decision to commute by helicopter between New York and the Philadelphia 76ers’ training facility has sparked a heated debate among NBA fans, with some questioning the safety of his travel arrangements.

The 41-year-old basketball superstar is preparing to begin a record-breaking 24th NBA season after signing a two-year, $8 million contract with the 76ers following eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Although LeBron is now playing in Philadelphia, he has reportedly decided against permanently relocating to the city. Instead, he plans to travel between New York and the Sixers’ training complex in Camden, New Jersey.

Videos of LeBron apparently leaving a September 29 practice session by helicopter circulated widely on social media, prompting criticism and concern from fans.

Tyrese Maxey confirms helicopter departure

Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey appeared to confirm his new teammate’s unusual mode of transport while speaking to reporters after practice.

“One of us left in a helicopter, the other one was sitting on the curb,” Maxey joked.

According to ESPN reporter Dave McMenamin, LeBron plans to use chartered helicopter services when travelling between Philadelphia and New York.

The arrangement could significantly reduce his travelling time, but several social media users argued that regularly flying by helicopter presented an unnecessary risk.

Fans reference Kobe Bryant’s death

Some of the strongest reactions came from fans who compared LeBron’s travel arrangements to the circumstances surrounding the death of his close friend and former Lakers star Kobe Bryant.

Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven other people were killed when their helicopter crashed in Calabasas, California, in January 2020.

Several users said Bryant’s death made them uncomfortable with the prospect of LeBron frequently travelling by helicopter, particularly during poor weather conditions.

“LeBron is a billionaire, is a grown man, he can do whatever he wants, and nobody asked for my opinion,” one user wrote.

“However, personally, this is slightly ignorant to me considering how close he was with Kobe and knowing how dangerous this kind of constant travel can be. I know he has very little choice if he’s living in New York and playing in Philly, but still.”

Others accused LeBron of “doing too much” and questioned why he would accept the additional travel demands rather than move closer to Philadelphia.

There has been no reported incident involving LeBron’s flights, however, and no evidence has emerged suggesting that the chartered helicopter service he is using is unsafe.

LeBron has not publicly responded to the criticism.

Patrick Beverley jokes about Camden landing

Former NBA guard Patrick Beverley also addressed LeBron’s helicopter commute during a podcast, offering a joking warning about landing in Camden.

“LeBron got a helicopter landing in Camden,” Beverley said. “Camden is not a place where they’re used to helicopters landing.”

“But Bron, be careful, because Camden isn’t the greatest neighbourhood. People are going to start throwing rocks at those helicopters, so be cool out there.”

Beverley’s comments appeared to be made in jest rather than as a serious warning about a specific threat. He also expressed excitement about LeBron’s arrival and the attention it would bring to Philadelphia.

LeBron targets another NBA championship

LeBron said conversations with Tyrese Maxey influenced his decision to join the 76ers as he pursues another championship during the closing stages of his career.

“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team, and I am so excited to energise a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time,” he said.

LeBron joins a talented Philadelphia roster featuring Maxey, Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown.

However, he declined to confirm whether he would continue playing beyond his two-year contract, saying he wanted to concentrate on the present.

“I think that would be doing a disservice to myself, just living in the moment, especially knowing where I am in my career,” LeBron explained.

“Me trying to focus on what the future looks like would mean I wouldn’t be giving myself grace. I’m more in the present now, understanding that I’m in year 24.”

Savannah James controversy taken out of context

LeBron’s travel arrangements became the latest James family story to attract attention after his wife, Savannah James, recently faced criticism over a conversation about flying with her friends.

A viral clip led some viewers to believe Savannah refused to pay for her friends to travel in first class with her.

However, the wider conversation showed her friend, April McDaniel, explaining that she independently selected business class because first class was outside her personal budget.

McDaniel said she did not expect Savannah to pay for an upgrade, while Savannah explained that her friends respected her circumstances and never expected her to finance their travel.

With LeBron yet to play his first regular-season game for Philadelphia, his arrival is already generating the intense scrutiny that has followed him throughout his remarkable NBA career.
