Rick Ross has escalated his long-running feud with 50 Cent by invoking his rival’s late mother while mocking the successful relaunch of the G-Unit Reebok G6 sneakers.
Ross claimed Sabrina Jackson would be “turning over in her grave” as he disputed reports that the retro shoes sold out within hours of their August 20 release.
The highly personal attack followed another round of exchanges between the two rappers over sneaker sales, new music, ageing in hip-hop and their respective business achievements.
Ross disputes G-Unit sneaker sellout
The G-Unit G6, originally released in 2003, returned in its classic white, red and blue design with a retail price of US$130.
Reebok’s online inventory sold out in less than two hours, according to multiple footwear publications. The sneakers subsequently appeared on secondary resale platforms. Men’s Journal
50 celebrated the launch by taunting Ross on social media, writing “Sold out, fat boy” after his longtime adversary had predicted that buyers would show little interest in the shoes.
Ross rejected the reported sales success, claiming that three leading sneaker retailers had told him they did not stock the G-Unit model.
“The top three sneaker n****s in the game told me they don’t have no G-Unit sneakers,” Ross said on Instagram.
“So for y’all to say they sold out in three hours… Reebok ain’t even capping with y’all n****s. Stop capping.”
Despite Ross’s doubts, Reebok’s online product inventory showed all sizes as unavailable after the release. However, the company has not publicly disclosed how many pairs were produced, making the scale of the sellout unclear.
Late mother dragged into bitter attack
Ross then accused 50, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, of repeating past business ventures and failing to match the achievements of Jay-Z.
“I’m disappointed in you, Curtis,” Ross said. “Your mama turning over in her grave, damn.”
Sabrina Jackson died when 50 was eight years old. The rapper has previously spoken about being raised by his grandparents following her death.
Ross also mocked 50’s past bankruptcy proceedings, claiming he had filed for “US$100 million bankruptcy” and had never recovered financially.
In fact, 50 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2015 while facing substantial legal judgments. He later completed a court-approved repayment plan and received a bankruptcy discharge in 2017.
Ross defends older rappers releasing music
The feud also expanded to 50’s comments about making albums later in life.
50 recently said that hip-hop was closely connected to youth culture and questioned the idea of a 50-year-old rapper attempting to have the best verse in the industry. He has indicated that he may still record individual songs but does not believe he needs to release another traditional album.
Ross argued that respected artists should continue releasing music for as long as their audiences want it.
He pointed to southern rap veteran Bun B and the late Pimp C as examples of artists whose cultural importance was not defined by age.
“They can put out albums ’til they 85,” Ross said. “That’s how it go when the streets love you, when the culture need you, and you bring something that can’t be duplicated. F*** what your age is.”
The latest confrontation continues a feud between Ross and 50 that has lasted for more than 15 years and repeatedly moved from music into personal lives and business ventures.
