Dame Dash has sided with Jay-Z over his decision to take aim at Ye during a recent freestyle, saying the rapper crossed a line when he made comments about the Carter children.
The former Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder shared his thoughts during a new interview with The Art of Dialogue, where he weighed in on Jay-Z’s widely discussed Roots Picnic freestyle and the ongoing fallout from Ye’s controversial social media posts.
While Dash acknowledged that Jay-Z had reason to be upset, he also argued that Ye’s past struggles with mental health should not be ignored.
Referring to the rapper’s public admission that he has bipolar disorder, Dash suggested those around Ye should take greater responsibility when he appears to be spiraling.
“Kanye is bipolar. He’s admitted he’s bipolar,” Dash said. “I think people think just because he’s famous that bipolar is different for rich people than it is for broke people.”
Despite defending Ye’s broader situation, Dash made it clear that he did not support the comments the rapper made about Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s family.
“I thought the kid thing I wouldn’t do that,” he said. “I wouldn’t advise it. I wasn’t with that.”
Dash added that if he had been present when Ye made the remarks, he would have told him he had gone too far.
The comments stem from a social media rant Ye posted in March 2025 in which he targeted Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s twins, Sir and Rumi Carter. The remarks sparked widespread backlash and were later followed by an apology from Ye, although many felt the damage had already been done.
The controversy appeared to resurface during Jay-Z’s freestyle performance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia on May 30.
Many fans interpreted a section of the freestyle as a direct response to Ye’s comments about his children.
“You ever heard of a wunderkind? My children is some of them, have you n****s no shame?” Jay-Z rapped during the performance.
The verse immediately sparked debate online, with listeners dissecting the lyrics and speculating about which figures in hip-hop were being addressed.
Dash’s latest comments add another chapter to the long-running and often complicated relationship between Jay-Z and Ye, who were once among the most successful collaborators in rap before their friendship deteriorated in recent years.
While Dash agreed with Jay-Z’s decision to defend his family, he maintained that Ye’s mental health struggles remain an important part of the conversation.
