Ozzy Osbourne, the iconic frontman of Black Sabbath and a titan of heavy metal, has passed away at the age of 76.

Known as the “Prince of Darkness,” Osbourne’s career spanned over five decades, marked by groundbreaking music, notorious antics, and a surprising turn as a reality TV star. His death comes just weeks after a poignant farewell concert in his hometown of Birmingham.

A Life of Rock and Reinvention

John Michael Osbourne, born in Aston, Birmingham, in 1948, rose from a working-class background to become a global phenomenon.

He co-founded Black Sabbath in the late 1960s, a band credited with pioneering the heavy metal genre with their dark, blues-infused sound and occult-inspired lyrics. Albums like Paranoid and Master of Reality became foundational to the genre.

After being fired from Black Sabbath in 1979 due to substance abuse, Osbourne launched a highly successful solo career. His debut solo album, Blizzard of Ozz (1980), featuring the hit “Crazy Train,” went multi-platinum. He continued to release acclaimed albums, with his most recent, Patient Number 9, released in 2022.

Notorious Antics and Personal Struggles

Osbourne’s career was as much defined by his music as by his wild, often controversial, behavior. The most infamous incident occurred in 1982 when he bit the head off a bat during a concert, believing it to be a stage prop.

His struggles with addiction were well-documented, leading to numerous health issues and personal challenges, including a 1989 arrest for attempting to murder his wife, Sharon.

From Rock Star to Reality TV Icon

In the early 2000s, Osbourne found a new wave of fame through the MTV reality series The Osbournes. The show, which chronicled the eccentric domestic life of Ozzy, Sharon, and their children Kelly and Jack, became a massive hit, introducing him to a new generation of fans and showcasing a more endearing, often bewildered, side of the rock legend.

Health Battles and Final Farewell

Osbourne faced significant health challenges in recent years, including a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in 2020 and numerous surgeries following a fall in 2019 that aggravated a previous ATV accident injury.

Despite his declining health, he made a final, emotional return to the stage on July 5, 2025, for the “Back to the Beginning” concert in Birmingham.

Performing from a bat-adorned throne, he reunited with Black Sabbath bandmates Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, and Bill Ward for a four-song set, telling the crowd, “You have no idea how I feel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

A Lasting Legacy

Ozzy Osbourne’s impact on music is immeasurable. He sold over 100 million records as a solo artist and with Black Sabbath, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

Tributes have poured in from across the music world, with Elton John calling him “a huge trailblazer” and “one of the funniest people I’ve ever met.” His legacy as the “Prince of Darkness” and a true rock icon will undoubtedly endure.
