Joe Biden has picked Kamala Harris as his running mate for the November elections, making her the first black woman on a presidential ticket in the country’s history.
The former California Attorney General has always been been thought to be one of the front runners for the job, having ran against Biden during the Democratic primaries.
After Tuesday’s announcement, Ms Harris tweeted that Mr Biden “can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals.
“I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.”
The announcement of Harris as Biden’s running mate earned instant rebukes from President Trump, who characterized her at “extraordinarily nasty” during a White House press briefing.
“She’s very big into raising taxes, she wants to slash funds for our military at a level that nobody would ever believe, she’s against fracking …” he said.
Harris is likely to face scrutiny in the coming weeks as she, like Biden, has been criticized for her stance on crime, particularly the biased prosecution of African Americans.
Harris allegedly presided the disproportionate prosecution of African Americans on charges of marijuana possession or peddling while she was California AG. Daily Mast
