Ellen DeGeneres has revealed that she misses working in television and is considering launching a comeback in Britain, four years after her long-running talk show ended.

The 68-year-old comedian made the admission during a rare television appearance on The Graham Norton Show after moving to the English countryside with her wife, Portia de Rossi.

“I’ve nothing really going on and I really miss being on TV,” DeGeneres told Norton.

“I miss a lot about it — laughing with the writers and the audience. I think about doing stuff here.”

Ellen jokes about British television

DeGeneres joked that appearing on television in Britain seemed relatively easy because of the wide range of programmes available to viewers.

“You have a pottery show, you have a sewing show, and you even have a show about people watching TV shows,” she said.

Her comments referred to programmes including The Great Pottery Throw Down, The Great British Sewing Bee and Gogglebox.

Although DeGeneres did not announce a specific project, her remarks suggested that she would be open to returning to television if the right opportunity emerged in the UK.

She appeared on Graham Norton’s famous red sofa alongside filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, actors Colin Farrell and Gemma Chan, while Suede performed during the programme.

Life after The Ellen DeGeneres Show

The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended in 2022 after 19 seasons and more than 3,000 episodes.

Its conclusion followed damaging allegations made in 2020 about the programme’s workplace culture. Former employees alleged that racism, intimidation and fear existed behind the scenes.

DeGeneres apologised to staff and acknowledged that problems had occurred, while an internal investigation led to the departure of three senior producers.

However, she repeatedly denied that the controversy was the reason she ended the show. She said the programme had stopped challenging her creatively and maintained that she had already been considering its conclusion.

In 2024, DeGeneres returned to stand-up comedy with a tour and Netflix special that she presented as a farewell to show business.

Moved to Britain with Portia de Rossi

DeGeneres and de Rossi relocated from California to the Cotswolds in 2024 following Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

The former talk-show host has praised her life in Britain, citing the countryside, politeness of local people and treatment of animals among the things she appreciates.

She has maintained a comparatively low public profile since moving but has occasionally been photographed with other prominent figures, including the Duchess of Sussex.

Despite previously suggesting she was finished with show business, DeGeneres’ appearance on The Graham Norton Show indicates that retirement may no longer be permanent.

Whether British audiences will see her hosting another talk show, appearing on a reality programme or developing an entirely different format remains unclear.

For now, DeGeneres appears ready to explore what British television might offer.
