Kanye West has been ordered to pay $140,000 to a former employee after a California jury ruled in favour of the worker in a dispute over wages and working conditions linked to one of the rapper’s construction projects.
The payment will go to Tony Saxton, who sued over work carried out at West’s Malibu property. The award covers medical expenses and lost wages, according to court proceedings.
Saxton had initially sought $1.7 million in damages, claiming he had been hired as a project manager for renovation work at West’s former $57 million Malibu estate in Malibu.
Court filings stated that Saxton worked on the project for about seven weeks but was paid only once before his employment ended.
During the trial, West — who now goes by the name Ye — testified as the final witness. According to KABC-TV, he told the court he had only a vague recollection of Saxton and said he was uncertain who had formally hired him for the construction work.
West’s wife, Bianca Censori, also appeared in court, telling jurors she briefly worked with Saxton while involved in the same property project.
The Malibu home at the centre of the dispute previously drew public attention for its ambitious renovation plans before West later sold the beachfront property. The jury’s decision brings the legal case to a close with a financial award in Saxton’s favour.
