Beyoncé has opened up about the body shaming she received when she was just 17-years-old in the late nineties as part of the girl group, Destiny’s Child.

The 39-year-old multi-award winning star reflected on some of her darker moments during the early stages of her career.

She made the revelation while speaking to Harper’s Bazaar for their Icon issue.

She revealed that she took advantage of the criticism and was inspired to write Destiny’s Child hit single, ‘Bootylicious.’ She said, “I remember when I started hearing people criticise me after I had put on some weight. I was 19.

“None of the sample clothes fit me. I was feeling a bit insecure from hearing some of the comments, and I woke up one day and refused to feel sorry for myself, so I wrote Bootylicious.”

The iconic singer adds, “it was the beginning of me using whatever life handed me and turning it into something empowering to other women and men who were struggling with the same thing.”

The singer opened up about her private life in the new interview. Although the singer is a well known public figure, she has managed to keep her private life away from the public.

She said she is very cautious about who she shares her private moments with.

“In this business, so much of your life does not belong to you unless you fight for it. I’ve fought to protect my sanity and my privacy because the quality of my life depends on it.

“A lot of who I am is reserved for the people I love and trust,” she said.

The Grammy winner who has been married to rapper Jay-Z since 2008, assured her fans that she has so much to share and more is to come soon.
